Gratuities

Gratuities have been subject to so much controversy and confusion in the past few years.

If you haven't cruised much, it's worth noting that virtually all cruise lines today automate tipping. On Holland America Line, $10 per person per day is added to your account, and is distributed directly to your stateroom and dining stewards, as well as their behind-the-scenes support guys. If you wish, you can change this amount by visiting the front desk.

(When buying a trip for a friend or relative, I consider it a nice touch to pre-pay the gratuity by calling ship services and ordering this from the Bon Voyage Gifts. I hate to give gifts have mandatory costs for the recipient.)

Okay, so that's the basics. But, I like to recognize exceptional service in a more personal way. And frankly, Azamara auto-tips 22.5% more and I got way better service on Holland America Line.

So if the guys go out of their way I tend to give them a little something extra. How much is the "right" amount? It depends entirely on you and how you felt about the service. On a 7-night we typically give the cabin steward $20-$40 extra, and something similar to the dining room guys.

Oh, and we ALWAYS give the room service guys a buck or two. It's otherwise a pretty thankless task.
