Happy ship, outstanding service

I was amazed and delighted at the level of service and general happy atmosphere on this ship. "Gracious service" is of course a hallmark of Holland America Line. They exceeded even my very high expectations.
For example:
- Consistently greeted by name. I'm amazed by the crew's ability to remember names, even on a short cruise and good-sized ship. Guests were regularly greeted by name in public areas, and always by our cabin steward, dining steward, and anyone who looked at our key card (front desk, bar staff, etc.).
- Eye contact, smiles. Everyone -- even the guys cleaning the Lido -- consistently make eye contact, smile, and wish you a good morning/afternoon/etc. Deck officers always tend to be less social and more focused (on navigation and safety -- a good thing!), but even they were courteous as they were conscientious.
- Efficient -- but never pushy. We never had a problem getting a drink on the deck or in a bar: just look up and you'll see someone who will come over to help.
- Table service in the Lido. Trays and plates were cleared very quickly in the Lido, and there was a remarkable level of assistance. An attendant kept a tray of glasses with water and iced tea ready to go (no waiting). Also, I am in no way frail woman, yet a steward (in Pinnacle Grill uniform, no less) jumped to help me with my plates.
- Spic-and-span everything. Brass was polished. Teak was immaculate. Dirty dishes did not lie around. I don't think HAL has used the tag-line "the spotless fleet" for decades -- I guess the OCD market isn't big enough -- but if you're fussy, this is a good place to be.
Overall, this was clearly a happy ship: crew were cheerful, joking with one another, smiling.
Okay, I know I got particularly attentive service -- I've known some of these guys from past travels. But even so, everyone on this ship got an outstanding level of service.
