Damage to QE2's Hull Means a Further 6 Weeks Out of Service

NEW YORK, Aug. 14, 1992 -- The damage to the hull of Queen Elizabeth 2 is more extensive than was previously believed based on the initial survey carried out by divers. The vessel is now expected to remain out of service for at least another six weeks.

The damage extends into the keel of the vessel. Permanent repairs will be carried out to restore the Passenger Certification of the ship. Cunard is in the process of inviting bids from shipyards in the U.S. and Europe to carry out the necessary repairs. Further details regarding the ship's re-entry to service will be available upon the conclusion of the bidding process and it is anticipated that the ship will re-enter service on Sept. 29, 1992.

In the interim, Cunard is contacted the affected passengers to discuss their booking and to make alternative arrangements.
