INNOVATIVE 85-FOOT CAMERA CRANE GIVES HOLLAND AMERICA LINE TELEVISIONCOMMERCIALS A BOLD NEW LOOK
SEATTLE, Dec. 4 -- Using a revolutionary camera-crane, Holland
America Line this month completed shooting a bold new television advertising
campaign aboard the company's luxury cruise ship ms Statendam sailing the
Caribbean.
"This is the largest, most aggressive TV advertising campaign in our history
and it will clearly promote the competitive advantage of taking a Holland
America cruise," said Jack Anderson, senior vice president, marketing and
sales. Anderson added that production of the campaign will be completed in
December and the commercials will air on network and cable television channels
throughout 1996, beginning in January.
The commercials were shot on board using the Akela Crane, an 85-foot
telescopic crane with a 35mm motion picture camera attached. The crane
enabled the company to "capture a fluid aerial perspective of the ship and
guests enjoying the many activities available to them on a Holland America
Line cruise," said Scott Fitzsimmons, director, marketing communications, who
supervised the shoot. "The Akela Crane is amazing. It gave us the ability to
film intimate close-ups and then zoom out for breathtaking shots of the ship
in one sweeping camera move," he added.
"Because this technique is so new and dramatic, the commercials will cut
through the clutter of traditional cruise and travel advertising and capture
the imagination of prospective cruisers," said Anderson. "Our objective for
this TV campaign is to build consumer demand for Holland America's cruises and
send those consumers to see their travel agents."
The new television campaign was developed by Holland America Line's
advertising agency, Elgin Syferd/DDB Needham of Seattle, and shot by renowned
commercial and movie director Ron Fricke.
Holland America Line's cruises feature a "Tradition of Excellence,"
including spacious staterooms, superb dining, renowned service, casino,
first-rate entertainment, duty-free on-board shops, the "Passport to Fitness"
activity program and complete fitness center, coupled with popular "tipping
not required" and "cashless" ship policies.
In addition to the Caribbean, Holland America Line's award-winning,
five-star fleet of seven luxury cruise ships offers cruises to Alaska, the
Panama Canal, Hawaii, Eastern Canada and New England, Europe, South Pacific,
South America and around the world.
Holland America Line is the winner of the 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995 "Best
Value in Cruising" awards from the World Ocean & Cruise Liner Society.
