Massport Announces 1996 Cruise Schedule; To Celebrate February As NationalCruise Month
BOSTON, Jan. 30 -- The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport)
announced today a schedule of 49 ship calls at the Black Falcon Cruise
Terminal during the May-to-October 1996 season.
The announcement of the schedule, which is open to additional ship calls as
Massport continues to market Boston and the terminal to cruise lines, is
linked to the industry's celebration of February as National Cruse Vacation
Month.
During the 1996 season, the Black Falcon Cruise Terminal will welcome
resumption of regular cruise service between Boston and Bermuda by the Royal
Majesty for a third year. Majesty Cruise Line will increase its popular
Boston-Bermuda weekly sailings to 26, three more than last year. Cunard's
Queen Elizabeth II will make a Port of Call visit on August 14. Carnival
Cruise Line will call at the terminal on October 18-21 for a trade show visit
to unveil its newest ship, the "Destiny," to travel agents. The "Destiny" is
a 100,000 ton vessel and the largest ship in Carnival's fleet.
"Holland American line also plans five Port of Call visits to Boston by its
newest ship, "The Veendam." The increasing number of cruise lines committing
ships to Boston underscores the success and growth of Boston as a desirable
cruiseport," said Massport Executive Director and CEO Stephen P. Tocco.
Last year, more than 60,000 passengers and 43 ships visited the Black
Falcon Cruise Terminal in South Boston. Easily accessible by car, air, train
or bus and located just minutes from downtown Boston, Black Falcon Cruise
Terminal is a convenient stop for cruise ships and passengers.
"Passenger convenience and value-added service are priorities at the Black
Falcon Cruise Terminal and with our Cruise Marketing programs. Massport
believes by initiating more customer-attention and amenities we create a
positive experience that sets Boston apart from other ports and cities and
that leads to return visits," said Ralph Cox, Maritime Director.
Massport launched several initiatives to provide value-added service at the
terminal. For example, the terminal was renovated to provide colorful and
easily recognizable signage for passenger drop-off, baggage locations and
parking. Bank machines and faxes also have been added. Massport had created a
CruisePort Boston Welcome Kit filled with brochures, maps, coupon books and
other materials to aid visitors. Majesty Cruise Line has implemented a program
to include Massport's kit with tickets for those passengers embarking on a
Boston to Bermuda cruise. The Welcome Kit is also distributed to Port of Call
passengers visiting Boston for the day.
During the 1995 season, CruisePort Boston generated more than $22 million in
economic impact on the city's hospitality, retail, restaurant, transportation,
food, produce and service industries. This year, CruisePort Boston 1996
estimates the economic impact will be close to $25 million.
