Disney Cruise Line Acquires Gorda Cay In Bahamas
CELEBRATION, Fla., Feb. 28 -- Disney Cruise Line announced
today that the Company has acquired Gorda Cay, a 1,000-acre Bahamian island in
the Abacos, from a group of private investors. Gorda Cay will be used as a
day-long stop for the cruise line's two ships, Disney Magic and Disney Wonder.
"After an extensive year-long search for an island paradise in the Bahamas,
we selected Gorda Cay because its natural beauty, size and location will offer
the ideal private island experience for our guests," said Arthur A. Rodney,
president of Disney Cruise Line.
In making the announcement, Rodney acknowledged the efforts of Bahamian
Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham, the Bahamian Cabinet and other government
officials in making the acquisition process a smooth one. "We are very excited
to be including the Bahamas in our cruise itinerary as it is one of the most
popular destinations in the Caribbean," he added.
Disney Cruise Line plans to create the ultimate island paradise featuring
the inherent beauty of Gorda Cay's secluded beaches, lush greenery and natural
lagoons. It will be the first cruise line to build its own private dock on an
island to allow for easy access to and from the ships. There will be a
half-mile long beach area offering a wide range of water sports and beach
activities for families as well as a secluded mile-long pristine beach for
adult rest and relaxation. Development of Gorda Cay is scheduled to begin in
Summer 1996.
Located 225 nautical miles from Port Canaveral, Fla., the homeport for the
Disney Magic, Gorda Cay is a virtually undeveloped 1,000 acre island.
Stretching 3.1 miles long and 2.2 miles wide, the uninhabited island is mainly
comprised of transient seabirds and marine life common to the area.
The Disney cruise vacation will be a week-long experience where guests can
enjoy a three- or four-day stay at a Walt Disney World Resort followed by a
three- or four-day cruise. The line's first ship, Disney Magic, will enter
service in January 1998, and sail round-trip from Port Canaveral, Florida, to
the Port of Nassau and Gorda Cay. The line's second ship, Disney Wonder, will
enter service in November 1998.
Both ships will feature the famous Disney characters and a myriad of
exclusive Disney shows, entertainment, activities and programming designed
specifically for families, honeymooners, adults without children and seniors.
Disney Cruise Line's first brochure will be released in July and the line
will begin accepting reservations for the Disney Magic in August.
