Disney Cruise Line Raises The Curtain On Its Shipboard Entertainment Plans
Line Takes New Approach To Cruise Line Entertainment
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., March 6 -- Disney Cruise Line announced
today that the line's first ship, Disney Magic, will offer the first-ever
seagoing entertainment program to feature Disney-created shows, activities and
special events designed for adults, families and children. Disney's new
seven-day cruise vacation will include a three- or four-day cruise combined
with a three- or four-day vacation at Walt Disney World.
"Disney Cruise Line is taking a new approach to cruise industry
entertainment by drawing upon the experience, resources and creative talents
of The Walt Disney Company to create what no one else can -- an unparalleled
variety of Disney programming that will intrigue, excite and amaze guests of
all ages," said Arthur Rodney, president of the line.
Disney Cruise Line's unprecedented shipboard entertainment program will be
exemplified through the line's nightclubs, lounges, sports club, Broadway
theatre, full-screen cinema, children's programming and its own private
island. The line-up includes:
-- Beat Street, an adult-oriented evening entertainment district, will be
based on the premise that "everyone moves to a different beat." Three themed
nightclubs and a retail shop are set in a dynamic street scene atmosphere.
Guests will be free to move from venue to venue including:
-- Rockin' Bar D -- the ship's "happening place" where the fun never ends
and every night comes alive with a variety of live music and dancing. Live
bands will perform rock 'n roll and country music including both current hits
and the classics and will be interspersed with top quality headliner
entertainment.
-- Offbeat -- the cruise industry's first shipboard comedy warehouse where
the humor is always "offbeat, but never off color." A showcase for today's
best comedic talent, the club will offer a series of shows each evening where
cutting edge comedy, improvisation and audience participation will keep the
ship rocking with laughter.
-- Sessions -- reminiscent of the Carlyle Hotel in New York where on any
given evening you might find a noted pianist playing a romantic tune.
Luxurious easy chairs and sofas seem at home in this sophisticated yet relaxed
atmosphere where adults can enjoy each other's conversation over a cappuccino
or cordial.
-- The Walt Disney Theatre -- a 1,040-seat theatre featuring one of the most
sophisticated show settings in the world. This grand formal theatre, boasting
extensive lighting and exceptional technical facilities, will showcase up to
four distinct Broadway-style production shows. Each evening, the line will
offer a uniquely themed production, including Disney classics and newly
created shows that combine storytelling with music.
-- The Buena Vista Theatre -- a 270-seat, full screen cinema with Dolby
Sound, will feature a variety of films every day, including Disney's animated
classics and first-run releases from The Walt Disney Company's motion picture
divisions.
-- Studio Sea -- a family lounge, will offer a fun atmosphere for families
with kids of all ages to enjoy. Themed after a bustling television
soundstage, families will enjoy high energy dance music, family-oriented
cabaret acts, participatory game shows and plenty of high-tech, multi-media
entertainment.
-- The Promenade Lounge -- a perfect place to enjoy a drink with friends in
a casual drop-in atmosphere with a live trio playing guest requests and
popular standards in a comfortable environment.
-- An interactive Sports Club, located in the forward funnel at the ship's
highest point, will offer a spectacular view. Sports fans will be surrounded
by multiple screens broadcasting all the latest sports news and events from
around the world.
-- The largest dedicated area of children's space on any ship afloat with
age-specific programming for kids ages 3-12, as well as a separate teen club.
-- Three pools purposefully tailored to create separate areas for adults,
children, and those looking for a more active water experience. At night, the
pool areas can be transformed to create elaborate deck parties where guests
can dance under the stars on the ship's special stage.
-- Disney Cruise Line will also extend its creative design and entertainment
talents to the company's own private island, Gorda Cay. The 1,000-acre
Bahamian island will provide the ultimate island paradise offering a wide
variety of water sports for guests of all ages and a secluded mile-long white
sand beach for adult rest and relaxation. It will be the first cruise line to
build its own private dock guaranteeing an island experience and allowing for
easy access to and from the ships.
The Disney Cruise Line vacation will be a week-long experience where guests
can enjoy a three- or four- day stay at the Walt Disney World Resort followed
by a three- or four-day cruise. Walt Disney World Resort is a 30,000 acre,
world-class entertainment and recreation center featuring three world renowned
theme parks, Pleasure Island nighttime entertainment park, Disney Village
Marketplace shopping complex, Discovery Island zoological park, 14 resort
hotels, Ft. Wilderness campground, 99 holes of golf on six courses, and the
new Disney Institute.
The line's first ship, the Disney Magic, will enter service in January 1998,
and sail round-trip from Port Canaveral, Florida, to the Port of Nassau and
Gorda Cay. The line's second ship, Disney Wonder, will enter service in
November 1998.
Disney Cruise Line will begin accepting reservations for the Disney Magic
this summer.
