SeaVision and The Nature Company Combine Forces on InteractiveMerchandising
MIAMI, Jan. 15 -- SeaVision, Inc., of Miami, Florida and The
Nature Company, a unit of Discovery Communications, Inc. (DCI), have signed an
agreement granting SeaVision the exclusive right to offer The Nature Company's
products on interactive television aboard cruise ships and in hotels. The
Nature Company "store" will debut aboard a number of cruise ships this summer.
The store will initially feature over 50 items, from moderately priced gifts
to high-end telescopes, but plans are already underway to expand its store
offerings in the coming months.
"Interactive television represents the future of merchandising and retailers
must begin testing concepts now so they will know what does or does not work
in reaching the consumer," according to David Gould, Vice President, Sales and
Marketing for SeaVision. "SeaVision is unique in both its ability to provide
a working interactive television platform for retailers and in the composition
of its audience. Cruise passengers are, quite simply, the most affluent
shoppers in the world."
"We realize that interactivity will be vital in reaching consumers. The
Internet and Interactive Television, while they will not replace our stores or
catalogs, greatly enhance the service that we provide our customers by
increasing accessibility," says Edward Strobin, President and CEO of The
Nature Company. "We decided to work with SeaVision because they are a pioneer
in interactive television and they provide us with an effective way to reach a
very desirable audience."
The SeaVision interactive television system provides a wide range of
interactive services for passengers, and revenue-generating options for cruise
lines, resorts and hotels. Some of the services available on the system are
shore excursion preview and purchase, room service, wine ordering, gaming,
movies-on-demand and retailing. The installed base of the SeaVision
interactive network will exceed 1 million annual viewers in January 1997,
making it the largest interactive television system in the world.
