Disney Cruise Line's Maiden Voyage Is 'Sold Out'; Overwhelming DemandPrompts Random Drawing for Space on First Sailing
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Feb. 27 -- Disney Cruise Line announced
today that the March 12, 1998 Maiden Voyage of its first ship, the Disney
Magic, is sold out. Since September 1996, when the line began accepting
reservations, more than 2,000 people have made a deposit to be added to the
Maiden Voyage Waiting List. To fill the limited space on this historic first
voyage, Disney Cruise Line staff gathered at the Walt Disney World Resort
today to announce the date of this first sailing, and to celebrate the random
selection of Disney Cruise Line's first guests.
"Early demand for this new resort and cruise vacation has been tremendous
and reservations for the Disney Magic's Inaugural Season cruise vacations have
exceeded our original expectations," said Arthur Rodney, president of Disney
Cruise Line. "We are thrilled that our first cruise is sold out more than a
year before we launch the Disney Magic."
Responding to this early demand, the line also announced that it will offer
10 Celebratory Season resort and cruise vacations, many of which were
previously unadvertised, from March 12, 1998, to April 13, 1998.
Disney Cruise Line's first seven-day resort and cruise vacation will begin
on March 9, 1998, with four days at the Walt Disney World Resort followed by
the Disney Magic's four-day Maiden Voyage to the Bahamas on March 12, 1998.
Ports of call will include Nassau and Castaway Cay, Disney's private island.
Guests who were randomly selected to sail on the Disney Magic Maiden's
voyage will be notified this week by mail when they receive a "Welcome Aboard"
letter from Rodney. Guests whose names were not selected can transfer their
$200 deposit to a different sail date or will be given a full refund of their
deposit.
The Disney Cruise Line vacation is a new seven-day vacation that includes
three or four days at the Walt Disney World Resort followed by a three- or
four-day cruise. Onboard the Disney-designed ships, guests of all ages will
enjoy spacious accommodations and areas and activities created specifically
for children, families and adults only. Walt Disney World Resort is a
46-square-mile, world-class entertainment and recreation destination featuring
three world renowned theme parks, three water parks, 14 resort hotels, Ft.
Wilderness campground, 99 holes of golf, the new Disney Institute, and
Downtown Disney, an entertainment-shopping-dining center consisting of Disney
Village Marketplace, Pleasure Island nighttime district and Disney's West Side
featuring exciting future projects such as House of Blues and Cirque du
Soleil.
The line's first ship, Disney Magic, will enter service on March 12, 1998,
and sail round-trip from Port Canaveral, Florida, to the Port of Nassau and
Castaway Cay, Disney's private Bahamian island. The line's second ship,
Disney Wonder, will enter service in December 1998.
