Royal Caribbean Cruises selects Altris Software for an innovative shore-side document management system
SAN DIEGO---March 7, 1997--Altris Software Inc.
(NASDAQ/NMS:ALTS) Friday announced that it has signed a contract to install a
proof-of-concept, enterprisewide document-management system for Royal
Caribbean Cruises Ltd., Marine Department.
The Altris Pro EDM system will facilitate shore-side document management,
providing access to technical and maintenance documents stored on an NT
server.
"This is the first document management system to be installed in the cruise
ship industry," said Altris President and CEO Jay Tanna. "This is an
innovative -- yet logical -- union."
Currently, each of Royal Caribbean's 11 ships manages all required
documentation on-board each ship. The proof-of-concept installation will
manage approximately 500,000 A to E size engineering documents pertaining to
the ships.
"When strict regulation require documentation to be controlled, current and
readily available, Altris products are uniquely suited to the task as
illustrated by our other customers in highly regulated industries," said
Tanna. "We have also successfully deployed shore-side document management
systems in other industries, utilizing satellites for document transmission."
An Altris Pro EDM system is deployed at British Petroleum (BP), a U.K.-based
oil and gas producer, linking a shore-side document database with users on a
drilling platform in the North Sea, eliminating the need to rely on helicopter
shuttles to deliver large or intricate documents that can not be transmit
adequately over fax lines.
The success of the Pro EDM system in storing, distributing and managing
maintenance and process data in all formats spurred BP to increase the initial
installation to many other sites and more than 4,000 users worldwide.
Following a successful evaluation period, Royal Caribbean could expand its
Pro EDM system to allow each ship to access the shore-side server and add
records for other departments, including human resources, safety and customer
service.
