MIAMI, Jan. 26 -- Carnival Corporation (NYSE: CCL) today
announced that its Italian affiliate Costa Crociere S.p.A. has reached an
agreement with Finland's Kvaerner Masa-Yards for construction of an 82,000-
gross-registered-ton cruise ship. The estimated cost of the 2,100-passenger
vessel is 700 billion lira (approximately $390 million U.S.).
The new vessel will be the eighth in the Costa fleet. Pier Luigi Foschi,
managing director of Costa Crociere, said the new ship order reaffirms the
confidence Costa's owners have in the future of the company. "The acquisition
of Costa was completed just six months ago and already the company has moved
to implement a growth strategy as laid down by the new shareholders by
committing to the first vessel in Costa's new building program," Foschi said.
Costa is jointly owned by Carnival Corporation (NYSE: CCL) and Airtours plc
(London: AIR).
Costa Crociere operates the most modern fleet in the European and South
American markets, operating seven cruise ships, sailing itineraries around the
world.
Micky Arison, Carnival Corporation's chairman and CEO, indicated that this
new Costa ship is part of a series of new vessel orders which Carnival
previously announced it was negotiating late last year. Arison said that
negotiations continue with shipyards for additional new buildings for the
Carnival and Holland America brands.
Kvaerner Masa, a Finnish company is one of the worldwide leaders in ship
building. It operates 13 shipyards in Finland, Norway, U.K., Germany, Russia
and Singapore. It has delivered six 70,000-gross-registered-ton cruise ships
for Carnival Cruise Lines since 1990 and currently has two more vessels under
construction for that cruise operator.
Martin Saarikangas, president of Kvaerner Shipbuilding and chairman and CEO
of Kvaerner Masa-Yards, said he was happy that the yard would be continuing to
work with the world's largest cruise company, Carnival Corporation. "It marks
a continued association with Carnival and, at the same time, the beginning of
what we are confident will be a long and mutually beneficial relationship with
Costa Crociere and Airtours. We look forward to building many more ships for
these companies," Saarikangas said.
Carnival Corporation is comprised of Carnival Cruise Lines, the world's
largest cruise line based on passengers carried, Holland America Line,
Windstar Cruises and equity interests in Costa Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line
and Airtours plc, which combined operate 35 ships in the Caribbean, Alaska,
Europe and other worldwide destinations. Combined, Carnival Cruise Lines and
Holland America Line have six new ships slated for delivery over the next
three years. The 101,000-ton Carnival Triumph is scheduled to enter service
in 1999 and its sister ship, the Carnival Victory, is scheduled to enter
service in 2000. Carnival also has two 70,000-ton SuperLiners, the Elation
and Paradise, under construction and expected to debut in March and November
1998, respectively. Holland America Line also has two new 65,000-ton cruise
ships on order, both of which are expected to debut in 1999.
