Royal Caribbean International Hits All-Time Booking Record
MIAMI, Jan. 20 -- Cruise bookings on Royal Caribbean
International hit an all-time record on January 12, with 21,827 gross
bookings. The record day in bookings also produced a record day for
reservations calls, with 29,000 calls logged into the reservations center - a
14 percent increase over last year.
"We are excited with the level of bookings since the beginning of this
year," said Jack Williams, president of Royal Caribbean International. "Our
first two weeks of 1998 have been terrific."
Royal Caribbean introduced two new ships, Rhapsody of the Seas and
Enchantment of the Seas in 1997, and will introduce a third new ship, Vision
of the Seas, in April 1998. The three new ships combined provide an additional
capacity of approximately 6,000 berths.
Since the merger of Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises in
July, the two brands have combined sales efforts in a 100-person field sales
staff -- the largest sales staff in the cruise industry. Supporting staff is
an intense marketing initiative, including the title sponsorship of the Super
Bowl XXXII half-time show and the introduction of several trade and consumer
promotions in conjunction with that event. Royal Caribbean also recently
opened an auxiliary reservations center in Wichita to improve accessibility to
reservations agents.
Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. is a global cruise company operating two major
cruise brands, Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises. The
combined fleet consists of 16 vessels in service and three ships on order,
representing a total capacity of 38,000 berths by the year 2000. These ships
currently visit Alaska, the Bahamas, Bermuda , Canada, the Caribbean, Europe,
Hawaii, Mexico, the Panama Canal, New England and Scandinavia.
