Cruise Lines Cancel Port Calls in Egypt, Travel Weekly Reports
NEW YORK, Feb. 25 -- Cruise lines are continuing to cancel port
calls to Egypt, despite the U.S. State Department's suspension of its
recommendation that Americans avoid traveling there, reports Travel Weekly,
the industry's leading newspaper.
The notices were first issued after the murder of 58 tourists by Islamic
militants in Luxor on Nov. 17.
Travel Weekly Cruise Editor Fran Golden said cruise line spokespersons told
her the lines were basing their decisions on feedback from passengers, many of
whom were still reeling from the terrorist attack in Egypt. "The lines say
passengers are telling them they don't feel safe going to Egypt now. Egyptian
officials have, however, assured travelers that security in Upper Egypt has
been increased," said Golden.
Norwegian Cruise Line and Radisson Seven Seas Cruises became the latest
cruise lines to omit Egypt from their itineraries, joining Cunard, Crystal,
Silversea, Costa, Royal Olympic, Mediterranean Shipping Cruises and First
European Cruises, all of which have canceled port calls for all or part of the
year. That brings the total to nine cruise lines.
Additionally, spokespersons for Holland America Line, Princess and Seabourn,
which plan to visit Egyptian ports during autumn sailings, say their companies
are monitoring the situation.
Egyptian officials said the cancellations may be due to other factors.
Abdel-Moneim Rashad, regional director (Americas) for the Egyptian Tourist
Authority, told Travel Weekly the cancellations may have more to do with fear
of war with Iraq.
