World's Largest Cruise Ship Celebrates One Year Birthday in Style
LOS ANGELES, May 27 -- Grand Princess, the largest and most
expensive cruise ship in the world, celebrated her one-year anniversary today.
In an onboard "birthday party," 1,500 passengers sang happy birthday, consumed
3,500 individual birthday cakes and partied the night away during the grandest
birthday party on the high seas.
During her first year, Grand Princess set sail on 42 cruises in
Mediterranean and Caribbean waters and logged 101,986.6 nautical miles! In
addition, the cruise ship was fully sold out for her inaugural Mediterranean
and Caribbean seasons.
Boasting the first-ever sea-going wedding chapel, Grand Princess celebrated
157 weddings and 537 renewal of vows in its first year alone. Other firsts
include a virtual reality center, digital photo studio and the SeaMed
Telemedicine Program, which links the ship's medical staff directly to the
emergency department at Cedars-Sinai medical center in Los Angeles to assist
with diagnosis or treatment in emergency medical situations.
In addition, Princess Cruises is in the midst of a $2.5 billion expansion
program, which will see three more Grand class ships added to the fleet. Each
will implement Princess Cruises' commitment to provide passengers with
unparalleled choice and variety with its Grand Class Cruising(R) philosophy.
