Guests Can Surf the Web While Cruising The High Seas on Board HollandAmerica Line's New ms Volendam
SEATTLE, Oct. 28 -- The new ms Volendam will be the first
Holland America Line cruise ship to feature an Internet center at which guests
will be able to go on-line on a real-time basis, check their own e-mail
accounts and surf the World Wide Web.
"We are tremendously excited about our new Internet center, 'The Web Site,'
on board the Volendam. Our upcoming new ships will have the centers and we
have plans to expand the feature fleetwide," said David A. Giersdorf, senior
vice president, marketing and sales.
"This is a service our guests have told us they would like to have. In
addition, more and more business groups and individuals are desiring access to
their e-mail while they travel. It has become a staple in today's business
environment.
"E-mail is becoming the chosen means of communicating. What letter writing
once was, e-mail is now becoming. Plus, the ability to go on line and receive
new information, check stock quotes, and experiment with new technology while
on vacation is something our guests like to do."
The new Internet center, equipped with eight computer terminals and a
printer, will be conveniently located on Upper Promenade Deck between the
Erasmus Library and the Hudson/Half Moon meeting rooms. The space formerly
was occupied by the Puzzle Corner; the puzzle table will be relocated to
another readily accessible area for the enjoyment of guests.
Providing the satellite connection and Internet services for "The Web Site"
aboard the Volendam is Maritime Telecommunications Network (MTN), a subsidiary
of ICG Satellite Services, Inc., and Digital Seas International, Inc. (DSI).
MTN is wiring the ship with fiber optic cable to connect the ship's
communications center with the Internet site. DSI is providing the portal
software and equipment.
Cost to guests for the Internet service and the hours of operation for the
Internet center on board the Volendam are being determined. Guests will be
able to sign on for a specific length of time; instructions for use will be
posted at the center. The charges will be billed to each guest's on-board
account.
"In research with our guests, we found that this service would be very
desirable," said Giersdorf. "We experimented with an e-mail service on this
year's world cruise of the ms Rotterdam and it was very well-received by our
guests."
Giersdorf said the company also is looking into the requirements for
installing dataports in guest staterooms, however no date for this service has
been determined.
