Harrods Added to QE2's Royal Promenade

MIAMI, Jan. 19, 2000 -- Cunard Line, providing the ultimate in deluxe ocean travel for the past 160 years, has just added Harrods, the London-based luxury department store, to the shops of the world's most famous cruise ship, Queen Elizabeth 2.

"By developing a close relationship with Harrods, we are reinforcing Cunard Line's brand identity and its deep roots in popular British culture," said Larry Pimentel, CEO and President of Cunard Line Limited, which operates both Cunard Line and Seabourn Cruise Line. "It is only natural that Cunard Line and Harrods, two companies rich in British tradition, cooperate to better serve our discriminating clientele."

Harrods, the first luxury department store to open at sea, will offer its signature gifts and souvenirs, including an assortment of Harrods' world- famous teddy bears, classic English biscuits, and custom-blended teas. To make the experience complete, all gifts will be packaged in the traditional green and gold shopping bag.

Harrods first opened its doors in 1849 as a grocer, nearly 10 years after Cunard's Arcadia, Caledonia and Columbia entered service. Other significant dates include 1898, the introduction of London's first escalator; 1913, Queen Mary awards the store its first Royal Warrant; 1919, Harrods starts selling airplanes and flying lessons; 1967, a baby Indian elephant is purchased as a gift for Ronald Reagan by Prince Leka; 1985, the Fayed family acquired the group that owns Harrods; and 1999, the 150-year anniversary of the store. Harrods currently has stores in the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Portugal, Japan, and New Zealand.
