Job Shadow Day Coalition: Groundhog Job Shadow Day 2000; NationalInitiative Kicks Off February 2nd
WASHINGTON, Feb. 1 -- On February 2nd, over one million young
people will go into workplaces across the country to see the world of work up
close as part of National Groundhog Job Shadow Day 2000. Select activities
taking place around the country include:
ARKANSAS
Little Rock Mayor Jim Dailey will host a student. Television stations
KATV Channel 7 and KARK-TV Channel 4 will host students.
CALIFORNIA
Over 55,000 students are expected to shadow around the state. Governor
Gray Davis has proclaimed February 2nd, Groundhog Job Shadow Day in
California.
CONNECTICUT
Governor John Rowland has proclaimed February 2nd Job Shadow Day and will
host a student shadow. Fleet Bank, Ernst & Young and GE are among
participating businesses.
WASHINGTON, DC
District organizers expect 2,500 students and 150 employers will
participate in Job Shadow Day 2000. Forty members of the White House
staff will host students on February 2nd.
Mayor Anthony Williams will
host students in his office along with the Deputy Mayor and his Chief of
Staff.
FLORIDA
In Miami, participating employers include Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines,
Amadeus, Anina Pharmaceutical, ResCare Premier, Jackson North Maternity
Center, Shoemaker Chiropractic Clinic, Miami Dade County Dept. of Human
Services, Starlight Learning Center and Carol City Police.
GEORGIA
In Atlanta, Superintendent of Public Schools Beverly Hall will host a
student shadow on Groundhog Day. BellSouth, Chick-fil-A, Best Buy, UPS,
Hyatt, Kroger, Westin Hotels and Georgia Pacific will also be providing
job shadow experiences for students.
IDAHO
In Boise, the Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General and State Treasurer
are expected to host students on Job Shadow Day.
ILLINOIS
In Chicago, the Chicago Association of Direct Marketers will be
participating in Job Shadow Day 2000. Chef Charlie Trotter will host a
student shadow on Job Shadow Day. The Chicago Convention and Tourism
Bureau and the International Interior Design Association will be
participating.
INDIANA
Indiana plans to have at least 10,000 students across the state
participate in Job Shadow Day 2000. Governor Frank O'Bannon has signed a
proclamation declaring February 2nd Groundhog Job Shadow Day in the state
of Indiana.
KENTUCKY
In Scott County, fifth grade students will be job shadowing in the
community. Once they've completed their job shadowing experience, the
fifth graders will develop a PowerPoint presentation of their experience
and present it to the School Board.
LOUISIANA
Baton Rouge students who have dramatically raised their test scores have
been chosen to shadow state officials. Prior to the shadowing
experiences, these students will be recognized at an awards breakfast.
MASSACHUSETTS
Over 17,000 students are expected to Job Shadow across the state. Mayor
Thomas M. Menino has declared February 2, 2000 Groundhog Job Shadow Day in
Boston.
MICHIGAN
In Detroit, Omni Point Communications and MetLife will be participating in
Job Shadow Day.
MINNESOTA
The Minnesota Twins will be participating in Job Shadow Day for the 2nd
year.
MISSISSIPPI
Attorney General Mike Moore and Lieutenant Governor Amy Tuck will have
student shadows on February 2nd. They have also announced that they will
give 10 $500 awards for the best essays from Mississippi students on their
Job Shadow Day experiences.
MISSOURI
One Job Corps student from Puxico will fly to Washington, DC, where on
February 2nd she will job shadow U.S. Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson, 8th
Congressional District.
NEVADA
The Governor and Lt. Gov. will have shadows. In Las Vegas, seventeen
Wells Fargo branches will participate in Job Shadow Day.
NEW JERSEY
Governor Christine Todd Whitman has proclaimed February 2nd Job Shadow
Day. Over 12,000 students will shadow across the state.
NEW YORK
Students will shadow Meteorologists Al Roker of The Today Show and Anthony
Perkins of Good Morning America. Students will shadow on the View.
NORTH DAKOTA
Governor Edward Schafer has declared February 2nd Job Shadow Day.
Governor Schafer and Lt. Gov. Rosemarie Myrdal will host students on
February 2nd.
SOUTH CAROLINA
Governor Jim Hodges has declared February 2nd Job Shadow Day. The
Governor and Lt. Gov. will host students. Organizers predict 20,000
students will participate across the state.
TEXAS
In Dallas, Junior Achievement kicked off JSD on January 30 with a live
radio broadcast on the Martin Birnbach Talk Show on the Big 570 am KLIF
from 11 a.m.--1 p.m. Fifteen students shadowed during the broadcast and
some were able to participate in the live broadcast.
VIRGINIA
At Dulles Airport, students will participate with Atlantic Coast Airlines,
a division of United Express, shadowing a pilot, working with a flight
simulator and taking a flight.
WASHINGTON
In Seattle, Microsoft, Nintendo, State Farm and Weyerhauser will each host
200 students for Job Shadow Day.
As part of its commitment to Job Shadow Day 2000, Monster.com is developing
a Virtual Job Shadowing program where students will be able to shadow virtual
"career mentors" via the Internet. The Virtual Job Shadowing program will be
available at
www.jobshadow.org
throughout the month of February.
Job Shadow Day is a year-long national effort to enrich the lives of
students by acquainting them with the world of work through on-the-job
experiences and a carefully crafted school curriculum that ties academics to
the workplace. Supported through an anchor sponsorship by Monster.com, Job
Shadow Day 2000 is a joint effort of America's Promise -- The Alliance for
Youth, The National School-to-Work Office, Junior Achievement and the American
