QE2 Assists In Yacht Distress
MIAMI, June 19, 2000 -- The Cunard liner Queen Elizabeth 2 was
requested by the Royal Canadian Coast Guard (RCC) Friday to investigate the
status of a single-handed yacht damaged by rough weather during a
transatlantic race. The yacht Syllogic reportedly had been knocked down twice
by heavy seas, and the RCC office in Halifax, Nova Scotia had been unable to
contact the boat by Inmarsat C radio.
When he received the call just after midnight Friday morning, Captain Paul
Wright turned the 963-foot liner from her New York-bound course and began a
search of the open sea. At 4:18 a.m. local time, the ship's staff spotted the
40-foot Syllogic sailing under a staysail only. They slowed the great ship and
attempted to attract the sailor's attention by using the ship's signaling lamp
and whistle, and finally made contact when they were very close by VHF radio.
The skipper of the yacht, owner Pieter Adriaans, stated that he had sustained
severe damage to his mainsail and lost his life raft, but required no
assistance. He had reported to the race staff earlier that he was suffering
from exhaustion.
Captain Wright contacted RCC Halifax and reported the status of the yacht,
and was thanked for his cooperation and a job well done. After once again
confirming that Adriaans needed no further assistance, he turned again for New
York, where the ship arrived on time today.
Queen Elizabeth 2 is the only liner still operating scheduled transatlantic
service, and sails regularly on six- and seven-day voyages between New York
and Southampton, England.
Cunard Line president and CEO Larry Pimentel said, "The North Atlantic is a
routine operating arena for QE2. It's fortunate that she was in the area and
that Captain Wright was able to assist in this operation. But it's really not
surprising that she was there. That is her back yard. She sails that route 18
to 20 times a year."
Marcus Hutchinson, of the Europe 1 New Man STAR media operations office in
Newport said, "Thank the skipper and crew of the QE2 for diverting to
investigate. It is great to know that the fellowship of mariners still exists
and that the mighty QE2 can offer assistance to a tiny single-handed
yachtsman."
The yacht Syllogic is a new boat built last year in the Netherlands and
entered privately in the Europe 1 New Man STAR race, which began June 4 in
Plymouth, England. The course leads 71 professional and amateur participants
2,800 nautical miles across the Atlantic to Newport, Rhode Island. Sponsored
by the Royal West of England Yacht Club, the race is the oldest continuously-
operated transatlantic yacht race. The Newport race media office later
reported that Adriaans had dropped from the race and was sailing for Horta in
the Azores to effect repairs of his yacht.
