Adam Goldstein and Other Business Leaders Urge Increased U.S. Energy Security
WASHINGTON, June 11, 2007 -- With fuel prices rising and American dependence on foreign oil at an all time high, U.S. business interests have launched an initative to build support for reducing the nation's dependence on oil.
The Energy Security Leadership Council (ESLC), a project of Securing America's Future Energy (SAFE), today launched a significant television advertising campaign to build support for reducing U.S. dependence on oil. The ESLC has issued a series of recommendations designed to achieve a 50-percent reduction in the oil intensity of the American economy by 2030.
The 30-second television spots will air for one week in the Washington, D.C. market on cable networks that include CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, and Fox News Channel. The commercial, entitled "Enemies", may be viewed at the SAFE website ( http://www.SecureEnergy.org ), and a script follows this release.
The U.S. Senate is expected this week to consider landmark energy security legislation that incorporates many of the ESLC's core recommendations, and the ESLC will undertake several initiatives designed to educate members of Congress regarding the profound dangers created by the nation's excessive dependence on oil. These efforts include:
Senate testimony before the Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship: On Thursday, June 14, 9:30 a.m., Frederick W. Smith, Chairman, President and CEO of FedEx Corporation, and Co-Chair of the ESLC will testify before a hearing of the Senate Small Business Committee titled "The Impact of Rising Gas Prices on America's Small Businesses."
Flag Day News Conference: On Thursday, June 14, at 2:15 p.m. in Dirksen 406, several ESLC members will conduct a briefing and discussion on the global state of energy security. In particular, they will review scenarios that could lead to disruptions in oil production and distribution. Participants are expected to include General P.X. Kelley, USMC (Ret.), 28th Commandant, U.S. Marine Corps (ESLC Co-Chair); General Charles F. Wald, USAF (Ret.), former Deputy Commander of the United States European Command (EUCOM); and Admiral Dennis Blair, USN (Ret.), former Commander-in-Chief, United States Pacific Command. Several members of Congress are also expected to attend.
"Through our efforts, the Energy Security Leadership Council is determined to end two decades of paralysis on America's energy policy. The nation's excessive level of oil dependence represents a direct and urgent threat to American economic and national security, and immediate action is required to improve vehicle fuel economy, expand oil production, and promote fuel alternatives to oil," said General Kelley.
Securing America's Future Energy (SAFE) is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization committed to reducing America's dependence on oil and improving U.S. energy security to bolster national security and strengthen the economy. The Energy Security Leadership Council, a project of SAFE, is an intensive effort by a collection of prominent business leaders and retired senior military officers to build support for a comprehensive, long-term policy to reduce U.S. oil dependence and improve energy security.
