Majestic America Line Hopes to Forestall Delta Queen's Forced Retirement; Tribute Events Scheduled
SEATTLE, April 14, 2008 -- Majestic America Line, the largest river and coastal cruising company in the U.S., is celebrating what may be the Delta Queen's final season with events in the Mississippi River communities where she sails.
The 176-guest Delta Queen is a registered historic treasure of the Department of the Interior and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She is also a National Historic Landmark and a member of the National Maritime Hall of Fame.
The vessel is currently scheduled to cease passenger operations as of October 31, 2008, when a Congressional ruling exempting the wooden vessel from modern fire safety regulations runs out.
Majestic America Line has been hard at work through lobbyists, Congressional visits, grass roots efforts and other activities to extend the Congressional exemption. Information on the "Save the Delta Queen" campaign can be found at http://www.majesticamericaline.com/.
Tributes to communities that the Delta Queen visits will be conducted on special dates during selected sailings of the season and feature a presentation to each city, medley of river music by the Delta Queen Band and remarks by Delta Queen's Captain from the bow of the boat. A calliope concert will follow as Delta Queen departs.
