How can I avoid kids?

Some people don't want to see a lot of children on their vacation. There are definitely more families cruising these days, but by and large they are well looked-after by the cruise lines, and they cruise during very specific (and avoidable) times of year. To avoid being bothered by lots of children...

  • Avoid "kid season." Summer and Spring Break are when families go on vacation. In the U.S, Spring Break season ranges from the end of February to mid-April, but most schools are out for one of the first two weeks of March.
  • Seek out extra-large ships that separate kids and grown-ups. If you do cruise during "kid season" look for a ship that gives youngsters a lot to do, and places to do it away from the adults. RCI's newer ships do a great job of this.
  • Go on longer cruises. Any cruise longer than a week will have relatively few children.
  • Go on mid-week cruises. If you want a short cruise, a four-day mid-week cruise will have fewer kids than a three-day weekend cruise.
