Advice for independent tours

Before you leave the dock with any vendor or cab driver, be sure to agree fares and fees, as well as what length of time and activities will be included.

This is especially true of taxis. Most drivers are honest when you ask "how much?" and "does that include everything?" -- but if you do not agree in advance, the sky may be the limit.

Also, if you are not happy, speak up early. For example, many drivers will test your limits by taking you to an "ambush" of local vendors (who pay him a commission). If this is not what you are looking for, when you clearly tell him this is not OK, many will shape up and improve the rest of your tour.
